Die literarische Karriere der achtundachzigjährigen Dorothy West umfasst mehr als sieben Jahrzehnte. Als Mitbegründerin der schwarzen Literaturbewegung Harlem Renaissance feierte sie in den frühen dreißiger und vierziger Jahren große Erfolge mit Kurzgeschichten und Essays. 1948 erschien ihr erster Roman, The Living Is Easy, der zum Kultbuch der schwarzen Literatur wurde. Seit 1943 lebt Dorothy West ständig auf Martha´s Vineyard, wo sie bereits als Kind jedes Jahr die Ferien verbrachte.
